The world itself is nice, but it seems that the game's quest doesn't encourage you to stay very long in one particular area. Youre down in the mines trying to kill a super mutant and there's no time to reflect on your journey after leaving the vault.

There is no sense of flow or pace in this game, things just keep happening one after another. It makes sense but as soon as you get to pinehaven, You're immediately thrown into the Raider scenario. As soon as you leave the vault, there's a palpable sense of tension looming over your entire party.

The prologue is nice but right after, the scenario of trying to escape Vault 18 is kind of a nightmare of quick saving and reloading. My biggest complaint with New California so far has been the lack of proper pacing. I'm also going to say that this game really doesn't handle large-scale battles very well, even though it seems you have to fight through one every 10 minutes. It makes sense, but I figure that I should have gotten some alert that I couldn't take the Survivalists' path anymore if that were the actual case. My thought now is I would have been introduced to the Survivalists' boss at that point, instead of fighting my way through every raider up to Athens-Tec, only to find the quest marker unresponsive. He asked me to come with him to meet his boss, however I just decided to kill them all instead, since I'm not too privy to going with raiders, willingly or otherwise. Early on, heading to Athens-Tec, I encountered some non-hostile, non-responsive Vault Vikings, then heading further into a town, I met a scripted encounter with a Survivalist dressed as a ranger, and his posse.

And there's always a risk that a mod won't work properly.Д«ut then it hit me: I could have potentially locked myself out of that path, even though the game didn't alert me as such. My first thought was the mod bugged out on me it's happened before, particularly with Someguy2000's 'Russell' not proceeding with quests as it should (apparently that one's poorly scripted, at least relatively so compared to his other mods). So I ended up killing every raider there, then went to Union City anyway, and reluctantly joined up with the NCR. I definitely appreciate the scope of the mod, but as poorly as I'm articulating my reasoning, I just don't feel like there's a good sense of pacing and plot development so far. It just feels like you're given a new objective forward with barely enough exposition to justify it, you do the objective, you rest to progress the plot, and then some kind of conflict happens, and you repeat. But it just feels like a slog to progress further in the plot, padding the path forward with an oversaturatrion of combat.ДЄnd as OP stated, the prologue felt decently-paced and enjoyable, but IMO it just kind of drops off pretty quickly afterwards. So, I have that tribal with the restored memory, the laser rifle tribal, a cyberdog, a warbot that only speaks in binary, and a bunch of protectrons (RobCo Certified was a recommended mod, but it really allows you to overload on companions early) following me as a party, and the path forward has been nothing but raider after raider after raider, which are swiftly dealt with by myself and my myriad companions.

I chose the nerd path, sided with the Vault against the Enclave, and after exiting Vault 18 and reaching the forked path, I decided to go towards the raider camp, because the tribal girl with the laser rifle said the lost tribals might be there, so I figured, what the heck, I'll go there.
